Here's what actually happens when you try.

In Outlook

You hit Forward on a conversation and the whole trail comes with it. Every reply, every internal aside, every "let's discuss this before we tell the client" that was never meant to travel.

You can open a single message from the conversation and forward that instead, which is closer. But the quoted history inside that message still comes along, and if the attachment you need was on a different message in the thread, it doesn't come at all.

In Gmail

Each message in a conversation has its own forward option behind the three-dot menu. Same story. The quoted trail sitting inside the message travels with it, and Gmail has no idea that the file you actually want to send arrived four messages ago.

The workaround everyone does

So the fix everyone lands on is the same one you're probably doing now. Forward the email, then delete around it. Scroll through the quoted mess, cut the parts that shouldn't leave the building, hope you caught everything, then re-attach the file by downloading it and adding it again.

It works, mostly. It's also slow, and the day you miss something sensitive in a long trail is a bad day.
